Te Pā Tū: the forest feast

Te Pā Tū was previously Tamaki Māori Village. The evening takes place among tawa trees and bonfires: forest canapés, a cultural performance with storytelling and dance in a forest-formed amphitheatre, then a four-course Māori fusion dinner. The songs and traditions follow the Maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar, so the evening changes through the year. Dinner is served outdoors, or inside when the weather says so.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, and so is water; other drinks are extra. The kitchen can do gluten-free and vegetarian meals but cannot cater for every diet, and it is not coeliac-approved. No cash is taken during the evening.

Mitai, Te Puia and Whakarewarewa

Mitai Māori Village is family owned and run, on Fairy Springs Road at the north-west edge of town. Warriors paddle a waka down the Wai-o-Whiro Stream, the welcome is followed by haka, waiata and poi, you watch the hāngī lifted from the earth oven, and after the buffet a guided bush walk leads to the sacred spring Te Puna Tapu o Tūhoe and the glow worms. About three hours. The Mitai evening, step by step.

Te Puia’s Te Pō evening starts with a 30-minute welcome and performance (pōhiri, waiata, mōteatea, poi and haka) in the carved meeting house Te Aronui a Rua. You then walk down to Pōhutu Geyser, often described as the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, for a hot chocolate beside it, and finish with a hāngī buffet at the Pātaka Kai restaurant, which looks over the geothermal valley. About two and a half hours; the entrance ticket is included. Te Puia also sells the same evening with an afternoon guided tour from 4 pm added, from US$165.

Whakarewarewa, the Living Māori Village, is a village where people live, using the geothermal resources to cook, bathe and heat their homes. Its guides are descendants of the early Māori guides of Rotorua. The guided tour, from US$26, takes in the boiling pools, mud pools and steam vents, the lookouts over the geysers, the marae, the WWII memorial archway and the historic churches; it starts at 17 Tryon Street. The 30-minute cultural performance, from US$17, adds haka, poi and stick games; it is a separate ticket from the tour.
