Seeing Kiwi in Rotorua: The National Kiwi Hatchery Tour

A one-hour guided tour of a working kiwi hatchery: eggs and chicks from September to March, adult kiwi in the nocturnal house all year. From $44, no under-5s.

Updated October 2026

Rotorua has a working kiwi hatchery you can walk through. The National Kiwi Hatchery Aotearoa raises chicks from eggs collected in the wild and returns them to safe habitat, and its guided tour takes you through the incubation and rearing rooms before ending in a nocturnal house where adult kiwi forage under night lighting.

When you go decides what you see. From September to March, the hatching season, there are usually eggs or chicks at some stage of development. The rest of the year you see the resident adults in the nocturnal house. Either way it is an hour, and it is the most complete way to see kiwi on a Rotorua trip: the birds and the conservation work behind them.

What the tour is

The Kiwi Encounter is a one-hour guided tour led by the hatchery’s conservation guides. You learn how kiwi eggs are incubated and how chicks are raised, see whatever is in the incubators and brooder rooms that week, and finish in the nocturnal house. From $44, rated 4.7 over 864 reviews.

The hatchery calls itself the world’s largest and most successful kiwi hatching and rearing centre. It is a charitable trust, and it says its ticket income goes into the hatching programme. It joined Operation Nest Egg, the national scheme that lifts eggs from wild nests to raise the chicks past their most vulnerable months, in 1995, and has hatched more than 2,600 chicks since.

Reviewers mostly talk about the guides. One in September saw “a 12 hour [old] kiwi, a four month and two adults”; another in August “got to see all 3 Kiwi” and walked through the whole process.

Getting there

The hatchery is at the Agrodome, about 10 minutes’ drive north of the city centre, with free parking. Check in 15 minutes before your tour; a short shuttle takes you from the check-in area to the hatchery building. There is no hotel pickup.

Children under 5 are not allowed in, for the birds’ sake. Photography, flash and video are not allowed inside.

Questions people ask

Is the kiwi hatchery worth it?

If you want to see a kiwi, yes. They are nocturnal and shy, and wild sightings take a guided night walk and some luck. Here you will very likely see adults in the nocturnal house, with chicks or eggs in season, in an hour, at a charitable trust that says its ticket income goes into the programme.

Where can I see a kiwi in Rotorua?

At the National Kiwi Hatchery on its guided tour, or in Te Puia’s nocturnal kiwi house, which is included with Te Puia’s day tickets; if Te Puia is already your geothermal park, you will see kiwi there. The hatchery is the one where you see eggs and chicks (September to March) and the conservation work. For wild kiwi you need to go elsewhere: tawharanuikiwitour.com covers the guided night walks at Tawharanui, a predator-fenced park north of Auckland where kiwi live free.

How long is the kiwi hatchery tour?

One hour, by the listing, plus 15 minutes to check in beforehand.

When is the best time to visit?

September to March, when you are most likely to see eggs or chicks. The adults are on view all year.

Can you touch the kiwis?

The listing describes a guided visit and a viewing in the nocturnal house; it offers no handling.

If you are planning the rest of the day, which Rotorua geothermal park compares the four parks, and the Kaituna rafting guide is the other half-day people pair with it.
