How Long It Takes

45 to 90 minutes for the walks, plus the 10:15 geyser. Three loops, what to skip if you are short, and the last-admission time that catches people out.

Updated August 2026

45 to 90 minutes in the park, depending how many of the three loops you walk. Add the 10:15 Lady Knox presentation and the 30-minute drive from Rotorua, and it is a comfortable half day.

The Three Loops

The park is laid out as three walks that build on each other. Take the first and you have seen the headline features; take all three and you have seen the park.

  • Short loop — about 30 minutes. Gets you to the Champagne Pool and back.
  • Middle loop — adds Artist’s Palette and more of the crater terrain.
  • Full loop — about 90 minutes total, out to the Devil’s Bath and round.

If You Are Short on Time

Do the short loop and see the Champagne Pool. It is the feature people come for and it is early in the route.

But be honest with yourself about the maths: entry is $28 whichever loop you walk, so a 30-minute visit is full price for a third of the park. If your schedule only allows 30 minutes, consider whether this is the right stop at all.

Opening Hours — and the Number That Catches People

08:30 to 16:30 daily. Last admission 15:00.

That last-admission time is the one that ruins afternoons, particularly for visitors driving down from Auckland, which is roughly three hours each way. Arrive at 15:30 and you do not get in — not a shortened visit, no visit.

Fitting Lady Knox In

The geyser presentation runs once daily at 10:15, at a site a short drive from the main park entrance. Be seated by 09:45.

There is no second eruption. If you arrive at 10:30, skip it and go to the walks instead — and read why it runs on a schedule before you feel short-changed.

A Realistic Morning

Time
09:15Leave Rotorua
09:45Seated at Lady Knox
10:15Eruption
11:00Into the park proper
12:30Done, and back in Rotorua by 13:00

That leaves the afternoon for another park or the town.
